AMREC Officials presenting empowerment materials to the people of Isaga Orile Community

His Royal Majesty, Oba Joseph Oladele Olusoji Tella, Arapapatira II, the Onisaga of Isaga Orile has given kudos to the Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC) of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta for the empowerment training programme on fish farming organized for the Isaga Orile community.

According to the Monarch, the Training which is one of the many empowerment opportunities enjoyed from the University is apt and it would serve as an eye opener for participants.

Oba Tella assured the University on behalf of his community that the knowledge gained from the Training would be put to good use.

Earlier in her Welcome Address, the Director of AMREC, Professor Dorcas Adegbite who was represented by the Deputy Director, AMREC, Dr. Olalekan Olukunle disclosed that Nigeria is among the largest fish consumers in the world with fish providing 40% of the human protein intake.

She, however, noted that according to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Nigeria is not producing enough fish and fish products and as such, there is a huge supply-demand gap in the Country.

The Director charged participants to take advantage of the Training to acquire the needed skills and broaden their knowledge in fish farming for improved agricultural production, economic status and healthy living.

Professor Adegbite stressed that AMREC over the years has been organising empowerment trainings designed to increase agricultural production, alleviate hunger and poverty among Nigerians, particularly, in the Southwest, Nigeria.

Topics covered at the training programme included: Fish Farm Management, Fish Tank Management, Fish Stock Management, Cultivable and Culturable fish, Water Quality Management, Fish Tank and Pond Management and Control of Disease and Predators in Fish Farming.

A presentation of two plastic tanks, four bags of fish feeds, one drum and one hundred juvenile cat fish was made to the community.
