Members of the University Community have been called upon to take advantage of the walkways on campus for physical exercise, as it is capable of helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
The Deputy Director in the Institute for Human Resources Development (INHURD), Dr. Janet Titilayo Bamgbose, made the call while delivering the Leadership Seminar Series of the College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS) at the College Auditorium, last Wednesday.
Dr. Bamgbose, in a lecture titled, “Structure and Function Relationships in Biological System”, lamented that Nigerians, including members of the University Community have very poor attitude towards exercise, a situation that was more heightened as a result of poor road network, unavailability of walkways and social insecurity.
According to her, taking a prescription of regular walk on the walkway “from COLNAS through COLPLANT to COLANIM building and back, is desirable everyday”.
Dr. Bamgbose, who is presently a Reader, stressed that regular exercise, coupled with balanced diets can prevent cardiovascular diseases and diabetes as they enable the heart and blood vessels to function effectively.
The Lecturer warned that indiscriminate consumption of fast food as well as the habit of frequently “moving from an air-conditioned office to air-conditioned car”, as a possible death trap.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bamgbose has also identified failure on the part of leaders to groom successors as a major reason for shortage of academic staff in Nigerian Universities.
According to her, “mentoring is a non-negotiable attribute of successful leadership and the ultimate goal of a true leader is not to maintain followers but to produce other leaders by transferring his virtues and knowledge to the next generation”.
Earlier in his Opening Remark, the Dean of COLNAS, Professor Tope Popoola, said the Leadership Seminar is a miniature of the University Inaugural Lecture, adding that it was the first of its kind among Colleges in the University, aimed at preparing senior academic staff for leadership roles in the University.
