The Nigerian Institute of Physics (NIP), Ogun State Chapter has held its First Seminar for stakeholders in the field of Physics, calling on all Physics teachers to make Physics interesting by developing simple methods of teaching the subject.
Delivering the Keynote Address at the Seminar titled “Physics in our Today’s World”, was the Commissioner for Education, Oyo State and FUNAAB’s 56th Inaugural Lecturer, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela.
In his address, Professor Olowofela said that at the mention of the name “Physics” as a subject, people get terrified, calling on all Physics teachers to simplify their methods of delivery for Physics as simple as practicable to encourage young ones.
He said that if simplified, Physics equations should speak to the student, noting that though, the language of the subject is Mathematics, necessary and applicable equations can be understood when taught in a simplified method.
He tasked the participants to create a network and endeavour to publish if they are to excel in the field as academic, adding that while as Physicists they should pick interest in what others are doing around them.
As Physicists, Professor Olowofela charged that they should create or discover their market, which according to him, “creating market for others is like solving a societal problems”.
Earlier, declaring the Seminar open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako welcomed all participants to the University and commended the organizers for bringing it to the Department of Physics in FUNAAB.

Professor Salako who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Morenike Dipeolu described FUNAAB as an Agricultural based University with other vibrant Colleges that are making significant impacts in various fields, which according to him, includes the College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) where the Department of Physics is domiciled.
He disclosed that the Seminar is to be anchored by renowned resources persons and it is meant to showcase the impact of Physics in our today’s world with target audience cutting across Physics Lecturers in Tertiary Institutions, Teachers in Secondary Schools as well as Postgraduate Students in the Department of Physics.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the organizers and the speakers to design a follow-up mechanism in which the participants are given post-participation mentorship.
The National President, NIP, Professor Hyacinth Aboh, who spoke through the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Abiodun Okedeyi stated that the Ogun State Chapter of NIP has come to stay.
He said that the present council of NIP is working to reposition the Institute and looking forward to hosting its website which will be all encompassing to cover all that is required for members.
Professor Aboh congratulated NIP Ogun State Chapter and FUNAAB, wishing them successful hosting.
In his own address, the Dean, COLPHYS, Professor Amidu Mustapha said that it is a thing of joy to have NIP decentralized after 40 years of centralization.
He said that the Ogun State Chapter is the first Chapter to be established at the state level noting that Physics is everywhere around us.
Head of Department, Physics, Professor Biodun Badmus welcoming participants to the Seminar
The Head of Department, Physics, FUNAAB, Professor Biodun Badmus and the State Coordinator of NIP Dr. Joseph Coker had earlier welcomed members and participants to the first seminar being hosted in the University.
Dr. Coker further stated that the theme was carefully chosen and timely, saying that it discusses Physics in the yesteryears and the changes cum technical improvement over the years, with reference to its relevance to the present generation.
