FUNAAB Sports contingents billed for this year’s West African Universities Games (WAUG), in the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State has gotten the nod of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako with a charge to go for Gold Medals.
Led by the Acting Director, Sports, Dr. Samuel Olabanji, the Vice-Chancellor made this charge while receiving the FUNAAB contingents in his office preparatory to WAUG sport.
Speaking during the Courtesy Call, Dr. Olabanji said that the athletes representing FUNAAB were chosen on the basis of performance and medals won during the last Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA) in Makurdi, Benue State.
On his part, Professor Salako tasked the Sports Directorate to work harder and widen its horizon into participating in other outdoor games such as Football, Tracks and Field, among others.
Dr. Olabanji, on behalf of the Sports Directorate used the opportunity to congratulate the Vice-Chancellor, for his one year anniversary as the 6th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.
He solicited for the Vice-Chancellor’s continual support for the Directorate, especially in the area on procuring a bus for ease of movement for the athletes whenever they are to embark on official duty.
Other things he listed on request were, the upgrade of the sports gallery, tracking of the field and employment of coaches to handle other sports lagging behind.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the requests are genuine and appreciated the Acting Director for display of hard work. Professor Salako said that though the University is having the challenge of paucity of fund, he solicited for time promising to do his best to uplift the Directorate.
Speaking on behalf of the team, the team Captain, Abayomi Bankole appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for his fatherly figure and promised that the team will put in their best to make the University proud.
