STUDENT’S’ WELFARE Management Tackles Challenges -Registrar, DSA, CSO Speak
The students of the University will start to heave a sigh of relief from the challenges they are facing as the ongoing proactive efforts of the six months old Professor Kolawole Salako led Management is poised to start yielding dividends.
The trio of the University Registrar, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Babatunde Idowu and the Assistant Chief Environmental Officer, Mr. Bolarinwa Peters articulated series of measures committed deeply recently by Management to students welfare.
Comfort Zone
According to the Registrar, Dr. Adekola, “Management is looking at the possibility of using some funds approved for the University, in principle, by TETFUND to rehabilitate comfort zone and build more lavatories for our students”.
Accommodation
Speaking further, Dr. Adekola who disclosed that 15 percent of the students are presently being accommodated on campus informed that Management is fine-tuning arrangements to build more hostels for students.
Transportation Management / Transparent Relationship with Students’ Leadership
Commenting on the challenges of transportation, the Registrar stated that Management had been carrying students’ leadership along in the rehabilitation of the seven (7) buses to ease movement within and outside the campus.
His words, “The Vice-Chancellor, the Director, Bureau of Transport (FUNAABOT) and the President of Students Union Government (SUG) visited the parking lot where they found about twelve (12) buses that have broken down”.
He added, “The Vice-Chancellor gave directive for the release of funds to ensure that at least seven (7) buses can be rehabilitated which has ameliorated the problem today”.
Corroborating the Registrar, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Idowu revealed that “On the state of the buses, the University is trying to refurbish and get more of the buses back on the road. As at this morning (Monday, May 7, 2018), the number of buses in the fleet dedicated to students has increased because the University took proactive measures to get the buses back on the road”.
Speaking on Management’s commitment to the welfare of students since the inception of the present Administration in the area of Security, the University’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr. Peters informed that Management has beefed up security around the students within and outside the campus where they live.
According to the CSO, Management is collaborating with security agencies, especially Nigeria Police Force, State Security Service (SSS), National Security and Civil Defence Corps and Vigilante groups for day and night surveillance.
Mr. Peters disclosed that “Management had contacted and engaged the services of security agencies for reinforcement through patrol, in order to ensure that cases of robbery, burglary and other crimes that are common whenever students are around are curtailed”.
It would be recalled that the Vice-Chancellor in his mission statement which he declared to stakeholders during his inauguration as the sixth substantive Vice-Chancellor late last year, informed that students and staff welfare are topmost in his agenda for the progress and development of the University.
