The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, has charged Nigerian Youths to imbibe the reading culture in their quest for knowledge.

Professor Balogun gave the advice at the formal Presentation/Donation of Books to selected Secondary Schools in Ogun State.

The Vice-Chancellor, who attributed poor reading culture among Nigerian youths to neglected and poorly-equipped school libraries, described the gesture by the University as part of its corporate social responsibilities, aimed at assisting schools to develop their libraries.

According to him, “Libraries are considered as a source of knowledge for the young minds.  Apart from being a repository of knowledge, school libraries assist students to achieve academic excellence”.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Chryss Onwuka, the Vice-Chancellor, called on stakeholders in the education sector, including government, parents and teachers to join hands in developing the minds of the youths through well-organized school libraries in both the primary and secondary schools.

The University’s Management presented 10 Cartons of multi-disciplinary books each, to 13 selected Secondary Schools in Ogun State, with a call on the beneficiaries to utilize the books appropriately.

Professor Balogun revealed that the books were originally sourced from “Books for Africa”, USA, through the efforts of a Principal Librarian in the University, Mrs. Adeola George.

Earlier in her remarks, the University’s Acting Librarian, Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Salaam, observed that an early exposure to reading and the availability of well equipped libraries would aid academic development.
