The University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET), has been described as a reference point for Veterinary Medicine in Nigeria.
The Acting Registrar, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Dr. Amang Markus Avong, made this assertion, during the 4th Induction Ceremony and Admission of Veterinary Graduates of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, into the Veterinary profession.
Dr. Avong praised FUNAAB’s COLVET as a model in Veterinary Medicine in Nigeria and therefore charged the University Management not to rest on its oars but strive harder, to make the College compete favourably with global institutions.
According to him, Veterinary Medicine is a noble profession, desirous of being accorded the necessary support, to help sustain the existing standards.
Speaking in the same vein, the Acting President, Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. G.A.T Ogundipe, expressed his satisfaction with the level of development of the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine since inception, admonishing the University authorities to keep up with the good work.
Dr. Ogundipe pointed out that Nigeria has the highest concentration of veterinary schools in Africa, boasting that 10, out of the available 30 are in Nigeria and with about 5,000 registered Veterinary doctors, practicing in Nigeria, which he said is one of the highest in Africa.
Dr. Ogundipe, called on the inductees to consider themselves lucky to have chosen the profession, while stressing that job opportunities abound for them in the federal, state and local governments, as well as in the private Veterinary hospitals/clinics and research institutes.
According to him, as Veterinarians, they can also work in Universities, Colleges of Animal Health, livestock farms and companies.
Presenting his Paper titled, “Prospect of Entrepreneurship in Veterinary Medicine”, the CEO of Adamore (Nig.) Limited, Dr. Musa Alasa, highlighted the many business opportunities that abound in the profession.
In her address, the Dean, COLVET, Professor (Mrs.) Morenike Dipeolu, encouraged the new inductees to utilize the skills impacted in them with dexterity and respect, charging them not to betray the confidence reposed in them by the profession.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Profesor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, represented the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Toyin Arowolo, implored the budding veterinarians to continually demonstrate the core values of hardwork, honesty, self-reliance and sound judgement in their undertakings as worthy ambassadors of the University.
