FUNAAB VC, Prof. Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has been ranked among the top research-focussed institutions in the world.

According to the latest edition of the SCimago Institutions Ranking (SIR), 2011 World Reports, the name of the University was listed among nine institutions in Nigeria and 56th position among 62 recognized research-focussed institutions in Africa, that made the list.

The ranking was the outcome of an exercise conducted at the SCimago Laboratory, Spain, released through its website www.scimagoir.com.

South Africa led other African nations with 20 of its institutions listed, followed by Nigeria with nine and Tunisia with eight.
Recognised research-focused institutions in Nigeria alongside FUNAAB, included the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Lagos and University of Benin.

Others were, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University College Hospital, Ibadan and the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

The release which is the 3rd edition of the SCimago Institutions Rankings (SIR), is one of the most comprehensive Research Ranking of Worldwide Universities with over 3,042 institutions from all over the world grouped into five institutional sectors.
The ranking was based on six selected indicators seeking to reveal main aspects of research size, performance, impact and internalization at Worldwide Research Institutions.

The SIR World Reports include institutions whose number of scholars published in reputable international journal, exceed certain thresholds and cited in Elsevier-Scopus database.

The report according to the University’s Coordinator of Webometrics, Dr. O. Folorunso, is expected to form part of the criteria to be used in the next January 2012 World Webometrics Ranking of Universities which attracts 10% of the total scores.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, expressed his delight at the development with a further assurance that the University would not relent in its pursuit of global excellence.

Professor Balogun congratulated the University community, particularly the academic, for the feat, imploring them to ensure they publish in reputable international journals, recognised by SCimago Institutions Ranking which is powered by Scopus Elsevier to adequately showcase the quality of the University’s research outputs.
